Medical Aid

What is medical aid?

It is a public assistance program where the nation ensures the medical problems of low-income citizens with difficulty of living or for those who are unable to sustain life. It is a social security system that becomes important means of securing the public health along with health insurance. Therefore, it provides medical aid services(consultation, tests, treatments) on the disease, injury or childbirth which may occur to the citizens who are unable to sustain life or having difficulty.

Type of medical aid beneficiaries

Type 1 beneficiaries

  • Among the beneficiaries of "National Basic Livelihood Security Act" , those that fall under the inability to carry out work, 107 incurable illnesses or facilities beneficiaries.
  • Traveling patients according to "Medical Aid Act"
  • Victims according to "Disaster Relief Act"
  • Level 1~6 righteous cause victims and their families according to "Protection of Persons Killed or Wounded for a Righteous Cause Act"
  • Adopted children under the age of 18 years according to "Act on Special Cases concerning the Promotion and Procedure of Adoption"
  • National veterans and their families / survivor defined by the "Act on Honoring and Supporting National Merit" and "Act on Honoring Independent Merit" (Classification by type according to working ability)
  • Important intangible cultural property owners and their families according to "Cultural Heritage Law"
  • North Korean defectors and their families being protected under the "Law on the Protection and Settlement Support of Defectors" (Classification by type according to working ability)
  • Those who were involved in 5·18 Democratization Movement and their families/survivor according to "Act on May 18 Democratization Movement Participants Compensation
  • Homeless, etc. (06/08/2012 enforcement) according to "Act on Welfare and Independent Support for Homeless"

Type 2 beneficiaries

  • Families that are not under the type 1 among the subjects of National Basic Livelihood Security Recipient.

How to use

  • How to use: Present the medical aid certificate and resident registration card when visiting the medical institutions
  • Aid details: Examination, inspection, payment for drugs, treatment material, treatment surgery, prevention, rehabilitation, hospitalization, nursing, transfer, etc.
    When becoming disqualified of medical aid due to exceeding of recognized income, return the medial aid certificate to the community center and visit the National Health Insurance Corporation Dongdaemun branch to receive the health insurance card.
