This Buddhist image of Ksitigarbha, the lord of the nether world, is enshrined in Myeongbujeon ("Hall of the Underworld") of Bonwonjeongsa Temple at Suyu-dong, Seoul. It is said that this wooden statue was moved to the current location from Taegosa Temple at Samgaksan Mountain when the temple got fire during the Korean War.
In this 1.4m-tall statue, the bodhisattva is seated on a lotus pedestal with his neck slightly dropped but maintaining a perfect balance in a simple posture. The general feature of the image, the seated posture, details of the robe, wood and carving technique show that it is an 18th century work.
